Zebrafish Health Monitoring

Zebrafish are now commonly used in a diverse range of bioresearch fields including, immunology, infectious disease, cardiac and vascular disease research, chemical and drug toxicity studies, reproductive biology, sleep studies and cancer research.

The health status of the fish used in research can alter, confound or invalidate experimental results. Therefore, it is important to develop and utilize a health monitoring program to detect infectious agents that may affect the animal and the research outcomes.

Cerberus Sciences are developing a range of PCR assays to detect an array of bacterial, parasite and viral pathogens. This work is ongoing with the range of assays available being extended to include all common contaminants of zebrafish. If the assay you require is not listed below, please contact the laboratory.

In addition, we offer preparation of histopathology slides with H&E and acid fast stains and pathologic evaluation of slides.

Zebrafish Sample Preparation and Shipping

  • For submission of zebrafish for health monitoring panels for parasitology by cytology, histopathology and PCR: Please submit 2 live fish per health status unit for testing.

  • For submission of zebrafish for health monitoring panels for histopathology and PCR: Please submit 1 fish per health status unit for testing, in 10% neutral buffered formalin. To ensure proper fixation, open up the coelom (abdomen). This can be accomplished by making a lengthwise incision through the body wall or by removing a small piece of the body wall. And please submit 1 fish from that same health status unit for testing that is placed whole in a PCR bead tube. Samples may be shipped at ambient temperatures by overnight courier.
